- my personal views on all walks of outdoor life

About

My name is Jaakko Heikka. I am a 26-year  Finnish man with a great passion for outdoors. I have enjoyed outdoors and nature for all of my life and nowadays I spent an ever-increasing amount of my time in the outdoors or at least doing something related to it.

I started hiking several years ago with a short backpacking trip to the Finnish Lapland with my friends. And that was immediately the point of no return. For the last few years I have been doing several one-week-long trips per year around the Lapland in all seasons and in addition several shorter trips in Southern and Eastern Finland. In addition to hiking I also enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, canoeing, kayaking and packrafting – and especially doing these things in remote wilderness areas with good company. I am lucky to have a long-time girlfriend and many friends who share my passion to outdoors.

At the moment my main interests are lightweight backpacking, packrafting, arctic and winter expeditions, other long journeys and gear related to these topics. Outdoor photography is also on my interests list. And as there is not always enough time for longer trips I also enjoy quality armchair adventuring.

This blog will naturally concentrate on the aforementioned topics but might also include anything else outdoor related, there might be even some occasional philosophical pondering. When ever I do a trip worth mentioning I try to write a trip report to share it with you.

My biggest trip thus far has been a three-week ski expedition to Svalbard in April 2011. I have blogged quite a lot about the Ultima Thule 2011 expedition. And even though the expedition was my biggest trip thus far, I hope that will change in the future. At the moment my time is mostly spend in Niittylahden opisto in Eastern Finland where I am attending on a one-year wilderness guide course that I’ve been also blogging about. After about ten months of school at June 8th 2012 I should become a qualified wilderness guide. What happens after that is a complete mystery but what ever it is, I believe that the outdoors and blogging will be still involved.

In addition to this blog I have an online gallery which can be found from here.

Even though I am a native Finnish speaker I decided to write this blog in English as I believe that it is the language of the Internet and this way I can share my opinions, knowledge and experience with more people. I have got so much from the outdoors related Internet communities that it is now time to give something back.
